In Greenwood, Indiana, a suburb of Indianapolis, schools often tour the local fire station. They climb aboard Engine 91 and hear Chief James Sipes teach important lessons about fire safety.

"Many children dream of becoming a firefighter," says Chief Sipes. "I wanted to give children that experience on a playground."

The perfect location for such a playground was a pocket park adjacent to the fire station. The town of Greenwood has several pocket parks that are based on various educational themes.

Working with the Greenwood Rotary who helped raise funds for the project, Sipes called upon GameTime and Landmark Design to design a two-story replica of the fire station with climbers and slides. There's also a replica of Engine 91. “It’s designed just like our fire engine,” Sipes said, “Same layout, same colors, same graphics." The children will feel like they’re actually playing the role of a Greenwood firefighter.”

Today community and school tours of the fire station end with a visit to the playground where children can put into practice what they learned on the tour.

With themed pocket parks Landmark Design can help you and your community inspire the next generation of firefighters or instill a love of learning through play.
