Landscape Architects provide a fresh perspective to playground design. They are masters at utilizing the natural surroundings to create unique outdoor environments that keep families engaged for years to come.

To celebrate world landscape architecture month, we wanted to highlight some of our innovative projects and resources that aid in designing the perfect playground.

Birmingham City Walk lies beneath I-59/20 Central Business District (CBD) Interstate bridges with a goal to bring together the citizens of Birmingham. The space includes the following amenities:

  • Lake Park Lawn: A high-traffic area, meant to provide a gathering place for special events. The space uses natural turf to minimize maintenance cost.
  • LED Lighting: LED lights line the bottom of the bridge, allowing visitors to continue their activities even after the sun sets.
  • Skate Park: This skate park is the largest in Central Alabama, boasting over 58,000 square feet of skateable area. It consists of a pump track, a street course, two large bowls as well as beginner bowls, quarter pipe areas, and an 11,000 square foot roller skating rink.
  • The Barkery: This 50,000 square foot off leash dog park features canine-centric play equipment alongside numerous hydration stations. The park is near the Pickleball Courts and Bier Garten, which features live performances accompanied by bistro and table seating.
  • Amphitheater: The Amphitheater resides within the center of City Walk and spans just over 10,000 square feet, with an audience capacity of around 1,000 people.
  • Civil Rights Zone: Lined with patterns along the ground and supplemental signage, this area tells stories from the Civil Rights Era.
  • Playground: Each playful space is meant to pay homage to Alabama’s five physiographic regions - Coastal Plain, Piedmont, Alabama Ridge and Valley, Cumberland Plateau, and Highland Rim. The eye-catching VistaSky Towers encourage collaborative, active play.
