Playgrounds provide more than just fun and games - they foster new friendships and enhance community well-being. Shiloh Park in Zion, Illinois, is setting a new standard for playgrounds with its inclusive activities and equipment that promotes active play, creating a vibrant and healthy space for everyone.

Read on to learn how the Zion Park District used matching funds from GameTime to lead the way in research-driven design and community wellness at this new National Demonstration Site for Inclusive Play and Youth Physical Activity.

National Demonstration Sites

PlayCore, our parent company, developed the National Demonstration Site (NDS) program to raise national awareness, recognize projects of excellence, and help communities demonstrate the impact of parks and playgrounds. NDS parks and playgrounds champion evidence-based design and are used for reporting community vitality.

Shiloh Park was an ambitious project, as the community desired to meet the criteria for NDS recognition for inclusive play and youth physical activity. With the help of matching funds by GameTime, this dream park was able to become a reality, championing play for all.

Shiloh Park

Designed with PlayCore’s 7 Principles of Inclusive Playground Design™, Shiloh Park serves as a model for communities aiming to create playgrounds that address the needs of every child. The inclusive design features accessible equipment, Poured in Place (PIP) Rubber surfacing, shade structures, wider decks, and a ramp to access the larger play systems. These activities address the physical, social-emotional, sensory, cognitive, and communicative needs of all children, including those with disabilities.

The Play On! NDS designation is based on PlayCore’s resource of the same name, which guides communities in promoting physical activity and fitness through play. Shiloh Park incorporates six key play elements—balancing, brachiating, climbing, spinning, sliding, and swinging—to offer diverse fitness opportunities that align with national physical education standards.

Celebrate Community Champions

Each new NDS playground represents a major advancement in parks and recreation, demonstrating the value of playful outdoor spaces and validating budgetary needs. As both an Inclusion and Play On! NDS playground, Shiloh Park sets a new standard of excellence for play for decades to come.
