About 5,000 miles Southwest of California is the U.S. territory of American Samoa, covering seven South Pacific islands and atolls. The island has a population of 43,914, and within that population lies a small rural school. The teachers at the school had big dreams for the students. With the support of GameTime and a dedicated team of collaborators, this school’s vision for a new playground became a reality, transforming not just the physical space but the lives of the students who use it daily.

A Call for Change

Last year, the government of American Samoa reached out to GameTime for help. The school’s existing play area was little more than an empty space, offering limited opportunities for children to play, explore, and grow. For many of these students, the dream of having a real playground seemed out of reach. GameTime was determined to change that.

Making the Vision Come to Life

GameTime designer Amy Burt got to work, creating playground options that maximized the small area available while ensuring that the designs were engaging and ultimately fun! After careful consideration, the school and local government selected the playground design that best fit their vision. It was a collaborative effort between American Samoa and GameTime.

Making it Happen

Getting the playground from Fort Payne, Alabama to American Samoa was the next challenge. GameTime’s Kiley Helton and Sabrina Cowart worked tirelessly to navigate the complexities of the project. From coordinating pricing to managing logistics, they ensured every detail was handled correctly. Shipping materials to a rural school on an island meant navigating a sea of red tape. Yet, the team persevered, knowing the impact this playground would have on the school and its community.

The Playground Arrives

After a long ocean voyage, the playground finally arrived. Where there was once an empty space, now stood a vibrant play area, complete with equipment designed to spark imagination and bring smiles to the students.  The playground is more than just a set of swings and slides; it’s a symbol of hope. For the rural school, it’s a reminder that dreams, no matter how big or small, can come true with the right support.

This project wouldn’t have been possible without teamwork and commitment. At GameTime, we believe that every child deserves a place to play. This playground in American Samoa is a testament to the power of collaboration and the impact that well-designed play spaces can have on communities.
