Dream Big
When the city of Sitka, Alaska decided to upgrade their community playground, they wanted more than a few swings and a slide. They had a dream of an inclusive destination playground that blended play with their unique history and culture.
2014: Steering Committee Selects Location
The newly formed playground steering committee identified the location of the new playground, Crescent Park, and presented information on the need for an inclusive, ADA-compliant play structure. The vision was established!
2015: Seed Funding Awarded
Thanks to funding awards from groups like SouthEast Regional Health Consortium, Crossett Fund, Sitka Women’s Club, and Sitka Rotary, the group was able to begin the planning and design process.
2016: Landscape Architect Concept Plan
Led by landscape architect Monique Anderson, and assisted by the children of Sitka, designs for the community playground begin to take shape. A land plan is developed for the park and final preparations are made for construction.
2018: Grand Opening
On July 4, 2018, the Sitka Community Playground at Crescent Harbor Park is officially opened! Children and families of all abilties have a wonderful, inclusive place to gather, play, and spend time together outdoors.
