GameTime supports the environment in product, program, and practice

Since 1929, GameTime has been dedicated to enriching childhood through play in the great outdoors, so it should come as no surprise they consider environmental sustainability one of its core values. "Being green is more than recycling," said Tom Norquist, Senior Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Design, "it also means being a responsible steward of our natural resources, and promoting play in nature, not in virtual electronic environments."

In addition to responding to the increased market for "green products" by promoting nature inspired products and programs, GameTime has gone to great lengths to improve its energy efficiency.

In recent years, the company has implemented operational policies and funded efficiency related manufacturing programs that have reduced energy consumption and raised the level of material recycling. Some of those changes include lean practices that organized manufacturing processes to maximize efficiencies, reducing the average monthly kilowatts of electricity used by 183973, and the monthly average of natural gas therms by 17561.

The company also turned their attention to waste reduction and recycling, another significant contributor to landfills. By implementing a recycling program in both the manufacturing plant and offices, GameTime has already significantly reduced the company's waste stream, with the recycling of 3.4 million lbs of steel, almost 250,000 lbs of plastic, 107 tons of cardboard and paper, and almost 1000 gallons of oil since the beginning of 2008. The company also recycles all used computer equipment, which has prevented 4300 lbs of computer equipment from joining the waste stream. "We use steel and aluminum as a core component of our play system design," adds Norquist. "Since they don't lose tensile strength with each recycle, they can be recycled infinitely, and therefore are some of the most responsible materials to use when considering sustainability on the playground."

The company-wide green movement has also worked to develop employee reminders that not recycling amounts to throwing away money, and is working toward paperless goals, to include storing, reading, and proofreading documents electronically.

The company shares a goal to achieve year over year improvements in all areas of sustainability and reducing their carbon footprint.
